Former Head of the Department of Medical Microbiology, RWTH Aachen University
Welcome to my personal website!
These pages contain information on my decades of research on bacteria of the genus Streptococcus and on streptococcal diseases.
Streptococci are coccoid (round-shaped, ~ 1 µm in diameter), so-called gram-positive bacteria. They are found on mucous membranes (mouth, nose, vagina) of healthy humans and animals. There, they can also lead to local infections. Once they enter the bloodstream, they may cause life-threatening diseases such as sepsis, meningitis, pneumonia, arthritis and glomerulonephritis, among others.
The versatility of the bacteria within the genus Streptococcus and the diseases caused by them make them a fascinating area of research (see my publications); they keep me occupied as a scientist, also after the retirement from my department.
In case you will need advice on the diagnosis or therapy of streptococcal diseases (and are living in a German-speaking country), please feel free to contact me.
